Recognising that you may have ADHD as an adult can bring a real sense of relief, and a formal assessment gives you the answers to move forward with confidence. At Spectrum Assessments, we provide a private adult ADHD assessment in Bristol and online for adults aged 18 and over.

Our clinicians follow NICE guidance, assess against recognised diagnostic criteria and provide a clear written report. You can refer yourself directly, with no GP referral needed, and be seen far sooner than typical NHS waiting times allow.

Recognising ADHD in adults‍ ‍

ADHD does not begin in adulthood, but for many people, it is only recognised then. A great number of adults, and historically many women and girls in particular, were overlooked as children because they masked their difficulties, worked twice as hard to keep up, or did not fit the narrow picture of ADHD that services once looked for. Being assessed as an adult is common and valid, and a diagnosis can make sense of patterns that have been present for a lifetime.‍ ‍

ADHD presents differently from person to person, and adults seeking an assessment often describe difficulty sustaining attention on tasks they find unrewarding, alongside intense focus on things that interest them. Other common experiences include restlessness, impulsivity, disorganisation, losing track of time, difficulty finishing what they start, and strong emotional responses. Recognising these traits does not confirm a diagnosis, but it is a sound reason to seek a professional ADHD assessment.‍ ‍

These traits can affect many areas of adult life, from managing deadlines and finances to relationships and self-esteem. Some adults have spent years being told they simply need to try harder or be more organised, without realising there is a recognised explanation for their experiences. ADHD also commonly occurs alongside other conditions, including autism, and a careful assessment can help make sense of how these different threads fit together for you.‍ ‍

Why do adults seek an ADHD diagnosis?‍ ‍

Adults pursue an ADHD diagnosis for many reasons. Some want to understand themselves and the challenges they have faced at work, in their studies, or in their relationships. Others are seeking access to reasonable adjustments, strategies that actually fit how their mind works, or a conversation about whether medication might help. A private ADHD diagnosis also allows you to avoid the long waits that many people now face on the NHS and to be assessed at a pace and time that works for you. Whatever your reason, our role is to provide a fair, thorough and evidence-based assessment.‍ ‍

Who is our adult ADHD assessment for?‍ ‍

Our adult ADHD assessment is for anyone aged 18 and over who suspects they may have ADHD, whether you are self-referring or have been encouraged to seek an assessment by someone close to you or a health professional. If you are seeking an assessment for a child or young person, our child ADHD assessment is the right starting point.‍ ‍

There is no upper age limit and no need to have been flagged as a child. Many of the adults we assess have quietly suspected for years, or have only started to consider ADHD after a partner, colleague or their own child was diagnosed. Whatever has brought you here, your enquiry is treated sensitively and confidentially from the first contact, and there is no obligation to proceed after your free consultation.‍ ‍

We know that reaching out can feel daunting, particularly if previous attempts to be taken seriously did not go well. Our clinicians approach every assessment without judgement and intend to build an accurate, fair picture of how you experience the world. Whether or not the assessment leads to a diagnosis, you will come away with a clearer understanding and practical recommendations.

Our adult ADHD assessment process

Our process is careful and led by experienced clinicians and forms part of our wider ADHD assessment service. It follows the structure used in NHS assessments, so the outcome is as credible as an NHS diagnosis..

1

Enquiry and free telephone consultation.

After you get in touch, we usually make contact within 24 hours and no later than one week. A free consultation answers your questions and helps us decide together whether an assessment is appropriate.

2

Information gathering.

You will complete a series of questionnaires exploring attention, listening, organisation, concentration, distractibility, energy and activity levels, impulsivity and the ability to take turns. Where it is helpful, information from people who know you well can add useful context.

3

Diagnostic interview for ADHD.

A structured interview by online meeting gathers detailed information about your background, current symptoms, strengths and challenges, covering the 18 core symptoms of ADHD defined in the DSM-5. This appointment can last up to two to three hours and, as an adult, is completed with you directly.

4

Observation.

Where an autism assessment is being carried out alongside your ADHD assessment, an observation assessment is completed as part of that appointment at our Bristol clinic.

5

Diagnostic meeting.

The information gathered is reviewed against the diagnostic criteria for ADHD set out in the DSM-5 to determine whether the threshold for a diagnosis is met. Please note that a diagnosis is not guaranteed.

6

Feedback meeting and report.

We share the outcome in a dedicated feedback meeting and provide a written report describing the information gathered, the diagnostic outcome and clear recommendations for support.

ADHD assessments at Spectrum can be carried out alongside an autism assessment, where a combined picture would be helpful. If you would like to be assessed for both, we can discuss the most appropriate route during your free telephone consultation, and you can also read about our adult autism assessment.

Who Carries Out the Assessment?

Our adult ADHD assessments are carried out by clinicians who specialise in neurodevelopmental conditions in adults. Our assessment aligns with the NICE guideline on ADHD (NG87) and uses the diagnostic criteria set out in the DSM-5.

Every member of our team has over ten years of experience across NHS and private settings, including work with adults who have co-occurring conditions such as autism and anxiety. All our clinicians are registered with the relevant regulatory bodies, including the Health and Care Professions Council. You can meet our clinical team to read full bios and credentials.

Our Bristol Clinic and Online Assessments

Spectrum Assessments is based in Bristol and offers a private ADHD assessment that adults across the city and the wider South West can access without long NHS waits.

For those travelling from Bath, Gloucester, Weston-super-Mare or further afield, much of our process, including the questionnaires and the diagnostic interview, can be completed online for convenience, with any in-person appointments held at our Bristol clinic. An adult ADHD assessment in Bristol with Spectrum offers local, experienced care with the flexibility of remote sessions.

What Happens After Your Diagnosis?

If you receive an ADHD diagnosis, you receive a full written diagnostic report that you can share with your GP, your workplace or your place of study. A private ADHD diagnosis from Spectrum meets the same standard as an NHS diagnosis and is recognised in the same way.

Management of ADHD is not only about medication. A diagnosis comes with tailored recommendations to help you move forward. Spectrum Assessments is partnered with a team that provides a medication service for clients aged 11 and over where this is clinically appropriate, and these appointments incur additional fees. Our helpful resources page offers further reading and signposting for adults living with ADHD.

What's Included and How Much Does It Cost?

Our private adult ADHD assessment fee includes all clinical hours, the questionnaire analysis, the diagnostic interview, the diagnostic meeting, the feedback meeting and the full written diagnostic report with recommendations. There are no hidden charges. The fee depends on whether the assessment is carried out on its own or alongside an autism assessment. For our current fee and payment options, please see our assessment costs and pricing information or contact us directly.

Choosing the private route does not replace the NHS pathway. Many adults come to Spectrum Assessments because waiting lists are long and the impact of waiting on work, study and daily life can be significant.
